Wedding Photo Usage Rights: What to Confirm Before Booking

Key facts
- List intended printing and sharing uses.
- Confirm editing, attribution and watermark terms.
- Discuss photographer portfolio and advertising separately.
Separate the questions
The deliverables tell you what files or albums arrive. The usage agreement tells you what you may do with them. Publication approval addresses who may show images of the people in them. Ask about each rather than relying on the phrase “the photos are yours.”
Jordan’s copyright text distinguishes transfer of a copy from transfer of copyright under Article 15. Article 13 requires written, specified terms for dispositions of economic exploitation rights. The WIPO Lex consolidated Arabic text also addresses permission from the depicted person under Article 26, with exceptions and conditions. The practical booking lesson is to document the intended uses; these provisions do not settle every individual arrangement.
List the uses you actually want
Tell the photographer whether you want to print albums with another printer, send digital copies privately, post selected images on your accounts or include one in an invitation. Ask about any attribution, watermark, editing or other conditions attached to those uses. Get an answer for the planned use rather than asking only whether “sharing” is allowed.
If a vendor wants a photograph for an advertisement, treat that as a separate request. Identify the business, image, channel and proposed use. Ask what permissions are needed under your agreement before sending a full gallery. Giving a business access for selection can be different from approving publication.

Discuss the photographer’s proposed publication
Ask whether the package proposes portfolio, website, social media, competition or advertising use. State your preference, including whether only approved images or detail shots may be shown. Agree on how selections will be submitted and who approves them before publication.
Consider guests and family members as well as the couple. A couple’s preference should not be assumed to resolve every depicted person’s permission. Share any private-event restrictions with the team before the day, and confirm who can access the gallery afterward.
Keep a clear permission record
Use separate entries for personal use, your own public posts, photographer publication and third-party promotion. Record the approved images or selection process, channels, any stated limits and the contact responsible. If you change your preference, request written confirmation of what can be changed and what has already been distributed.
If there is an ownership dispute or uncertainty about a proposed commercial use, obtain advice on the actual agreement and applicable law before proceeding. Do not substitute a generic booking checklist for that review. Discover photographers through Farhetna and confirm permission terms directly.
Common questions
Does paying for photography automatically transfer all rights?
Do not assume that. Confirm the rights and uses specified in the agreement.
Can we approve only selected portfolio images?
Ask for that arrangement and document the selection and approval process.
Can a venue use our photographs in advertising?
Confirm the required permissions for that specific use before providing images for promotion.
